Taliah Waajid’s 2015 World Natural Hair Health & Beauty Show™ (WNHS) was bigger, better, and continued to create buzz in the natural hair community. Naturalistas from all over the United States and a few travelers from abroad traveled to Georgia to attend Taliah Waajid’s Natural Hair Show. The two-day trade show was held at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park, GA. Waajid’s Natural Hair Show had more than 200 exhibitors that performed free natural hair consultations and hairstyling, natural skin care, health and beauty products, custom-made jewelry, exotic aromas, and unique fashions. On top of that, attendees were able to enjoy educational seminars for consumers and professionals, fashion shows, a Book Nook, a Social Circle Lounge, Wellness Way, Fitness Zone, Children’s Corner and feature performances by Leela James (TV One’s R&B Divas), Grammy Award Winner LeAndria Johnson, and Casme.
Before Leela James’ performance legendary hip-hop artist and radio personality Chubb Rock warmed up the crowd with old school jams and a few of his classic songs. Chubb Rock took WNHS attendees down a musical memory lane with old school music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. During Chubb Rock’s set, Naturalistas were transported from a natural hair show to an old school party and they were in the crowd doing The Cabbage Patch, The Smurf, and The Wop.
Leela James delighted WNHS attendees with her songs and inspiring words. After belting out several crowd favorites, Leela took a moment to speak her truth. She encouraged WNHS attendees to remember the less fortunate and to give back to their community. Also, Leela told WNHS attendees to be proud of their natural hair and to wear it with pride. She finished her time onstage by bringing some fans into the spotlight and they danced to EU’s Da Butt and George Clinton’s Atomic Dog. After her performance, Leela made time to take pictures and sign autographs for nearly 100 fans. During a post-performance interview, she said that she thought her first album was put on the shelf for five years because of her natural hair but Leela was unwilling to conform her hair to the music industry’s standard of beauty.
Aevin Dugas, Guinness World Record holder for The World’s Largest Afro and natural hair ambassador was in attendance for WNHS 2015. About 15 years ago, Dugas transitioned to natural hair with no intentions of being a world record holder. Dugas said “I encountered people who laughed and stared at my hair along with people who were positive and supportive when I initially transitioned to natural hair.” Dugas shared her natural hair regiment which involves separating her hair into four parts and then shampooing, conditioning, deep conditioning, and then styling. Since becoming a Guinness World Record holder, Dugas has traveled internationally to share her story with Naturalistas and she has been featured in newspapers in France, Nepal, and Afghanistan.
The Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair Health & Beauty Show ™ will take place again in the spring of 2016 at the Georgia International Convention Center. Visit www.naturalhairshow.org to find out more about next year’s event.
