Esnavi

Esnavi [pronounced Es-Nah-V] is a singer and songwriter with a voice of undeniable soul, lyrics that contain thought provoking truth, and her own unique sound. In 2011, Esnavi released Exit E, her debut album. Unexpected Love, Esnavi’s first Exit E single quickly reached the Top 40 on the Urban Adult Contemporary Chart and remained there for over 15 weeks. You might have heard Esnavi’s single What U Need on VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: New York (Season 4). If you are a fan of VH1’s hit reality show, Mob Wives, then you saw Esnavi’s performance on a show last season. Since the release of Exit E, as an independent artist, Esnavi has secured music licensing deals with H&M, Old Navy, Abercrombie & Fitch, Nine West, Ann Taylor, and Arden B stores. Also, Esnavi is the face of Alison Raffaele Cosmetics’ beauty campaign and she has her own nail collection called Esnavi Live, which is a part of the Dazzle Dry collection by VB Cosmetics. With the release of only one album, Esnavi is becoming a force in the music and beauty industry. Below is my interview with Esnavi about her musical journey, her hair, and her role in the beauty industry.

Phillips: The N in Esnavi represents the word Natural. What does natural mean to you?

I know everyone views hair from different perspectives but as an entertainer, I see hair as an accessory.

Esnavi: We live in a world of imitation products full of artificial flavoring and ingredients. The letter N in Esnavi represents being natural which I define as being in alignment with your true self. I know I am talking to a hair magazine but my definition isn’t focused exclusively on natural hair or not wearing make-up, I am referring to people embracing themselves. Since my childhood, I’ve embraced who I am and I used music as a vehicle to express myself. Music has always felt natural to me. I just go with the esnavi2_20150511flow and allow what’s inside of me to come out on paper and in the studio. Hopefully my music will inspire and encourage my fans to connect with their true selves.

Phillips: What inspires you to write a song?

Esnavi: I’m inspired by my life and the situations that I experience. The song Someday, which is on Exit E is my favorite song because it’s a testimony of my experience at that exact moment. Someday is a song that gave me hope when I was having doubts about my musical career. As artists, we sacrifice our lives, our time, and our energy to pursue our dreams. Before I wrote Someday, I was wondering when I was going to see the material benefits of all of my efforts. Someday was a song written for me and my fans because writing the song helped me to stay focused on my dreams. Hopefully, Someday will inspire someone who is facing a challenging situation to keep pushing and striving for their dreams.

Phillips: How do you manage your hair when you are on tour?

I know everyone views hair from different perspectives but as an entertainer, I see hair as an accessory.

Esnavi: I wear wigs and weave to protect my natural hair. When I am not on stage performing or making appearances, I wear my real hair and maintain it by washing and conditioning it. I know everyone views hair from different perspectives but as an entertainer, I see hair as an accessory. I live in New York City, the city that never sleeps and I have to be ready when opportunity knocks at my door. My wigs or weaved hairstyles keep me ready. My wigs are the quickest and most convenient way to look polished when I am requested to attend a red carpet event. They also allow me to have versatility by having different looks. So for me, managing my hair is quite easy when I am on the road or making appearances. I know you and your readers have connections in the hair industry so I am about to speak things into existence, I would love to partner with a wig or weave line.

Phillips: You are an unsigned artist without a major label record deal but you have somehow managed to secure a cosmetics deal and a nail line. How were you and your team able to pull this off?

I’m still amazed that we were able to create relationships with Alison Raffaele Cosmetics and Dazzle Dry collection by VB Cosmetics.

Esnavi: After the release of my debut album, I am still amazed that we were able to create relationships with Alison Raffaele Cosmetics and Dazzle Dry collection by VB Cosmetics. There are lots of artists who have recording contracts with major record labels who haven’t been afforded the opportunities that have been presented to me. I think it was just being exposed to the right people at the right time. I looked at myself as a recording artist and I didn’t see myself as a print model. But sometimes other people see things in you that you don’t see in yourself. Alison Raffaele Cosmetics wanted women who had compelling stories in addition to beautiful faces to represent their brand. My Alison Raffaele advertisements caught the attention of VB Cosmetics and that opened the door for the Dazzle Dry collection. This whole experience has been amazing and is a true blessing especially this early in my career. I’m so thankful to have YaYa Rey of IndieGround House Management in my corner along with friends and family members who have my back.
